Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

You have done well when you stopped smoking, and we ask Allaah The Almighty to protect you from every evil and harm; and we advise you to accompany righteous people.

We previously clarified the prohibition of smoking in Fatwa 81589, so a Muslim must stop smoking since its prohibition is established in Sharee’ah. The obligation to quit smoking becomes more confirmed in your regard by your mother's order to stop it. That is because obedience to parents is obligatory in righteousness. Your mother ordered you to do a good deed and wished you all goodness. Thus, we urge you to be dutiful to her after her death by supplicating Allaah for her, giving charity and other good acts on her behalf. For further information see Fatwa 83233about dutifulness to one's parents after their death.

However, there are no consequences for your mother's saying that the milk she breastfed you is not lawful to you if you did not stop smoking. So, do not care about that and rather focus on doing the deeds which benefit you in this life and in the Hereafter.

Allaah Knows best.
