Grandchildren calling their grandmother “mom”
Fatwa No: 139426

Question

Salaam alaykum, I have a question concerning my mother-in-law. My son is now 9 months old and the grandchildren have to call their grandmother (my mother-in-law) "mi" which is Moroccan for "mother". I do not agree with this, but every discussion on this point ends with a huge discussion between my husband and me. I consider my child has only one mother, and that is me. My husband says that my son will call me "mama" and his mother "mi" and does not consider this a problem. Could you please tell me whether this is Islamically right? May Allah (swt) reward you for your efforts. Assalamu alaykum.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

The matter which you raised in your question is easy and it should not cause a dissension between you and your husband. Islamically, both the mother of the father and the mother of the mother are considered as mothers for their grandchildren, Allaah Says (what means): {Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers.}[Quran 4:23] The term mother includes the mother of the mother and the mother of the father and it even includes the great-grandmothers as interpreted by the scholars .

Therefore, it is permissible for the grandchildren to call their grandmother ‘mom’ (mother).

Allaah Knows best.
