Selling energy drinks to bars and night clubs
Fatwa No: 184609

Question

I am a distributor of Glaxosmithkline products in Kenya, and I sell to all channels from supermarkets to kiosks, recently they proposed to me to sell their energy drinks (lucozade) to bars and night clubs, is it haram to do so, shall I refuse the proposal or do I go ahead.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible for you to accept this offer and to distribute these drinks to bars and night clubs. A number of doctors and professors in clinical nutrition have confirmed that energy drinks involve many disadvantages (i.e. they lead to many health problems) and they have warned against them. Since their harm is confirmed, it becomes forbidden to consume them or sell them.

In addition to this, distributing drinks in such places is not permissible even if the drink is in itself lawful, as Allaah Says (what means): {... but do not help one another in sin and transgression.}[Quran 5:2]

Allaah Knows best.
