Bismillah-Hi-Rehman-Ni-Raheem in which occasions prophet muhammad peace be upon him used to wear lungi and which types? Jazakallah kairan
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did wear an Izaar but as far as we know, he did not wear it on specific occasions. In fact, scholars mentioned that the Izaar was his most common clothing, as stated by The Haafith Ibn Hajar in his Fat-h Al-Baari.
The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, wore anything that was available without troubling himself. The Haafith Al-‘Iraaqi said in his Alfiyyah (what means): "The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to wear whatever clothes were available: an Izaar (lower garment), a Qamees (long loose shirt), a Ridaa’ (upper garment), a Burdah (striped cloak), a Shamlah (wrapper made of wool or goat-hair), a Hibrah (striped cotton garment from Yemen), a Jubbah (cloak or mantle), or a Qabaa’ (a garment with close-fitting sleeves)."
He wore an Izaar during the Hajj and forbade people from wearing trousers while in a state of Ihraam unless they could not find an Izaar. He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Whoever cannot find an Izaar may wear trousers (Saraaweel)." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
As for the types of Izaar: if you are referring to the appearance, an Izaar refers to any single-piece garment wrapped round the lower part of the body. Az-Zabeedi said, "The Izaar is a waist-wrap that covers the lower part of the body and the Ridaa’ is a garment placed over the shoulders and the back, covering the upper part of the body; both are untailored." [Taaj Al-‘Aroos]
Izaars may be of different types in terms of the fabric they are made of.
Allaah Knows best.
