Question

Assalamualaikum, I am a 15 year old male muslim who lives in the United States. I play soccer. My question is regarding wearing nike. I know there is a difference of opinion among everyone but I seem to be leaning towards the opinion that it is haram. My parents do not want me to worry about it but I feel like when I wear it I am commiting kufr. My question is; is wearing nike major shirk and does it take you out of the fold of islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We previously underlined that "Nike" refers to the ancient Greek goddess of victory, the daughter of the giant Titan Pallas and of the infernal River Styx in Greek mythology – and that it is impermissible for the Muslim to wear clothes bearing the name "Nike" unless it is removed or altered.

However, there is no doubt that merely wearing the clothes bearing the "Nike" name is not an act of disbelief in and of itself, let alone an act of major disbelief that takes the person out of the fold of Islam. None of the Muslim scholars hold such an opinion.

Allaah Knows best.
