Ruling on fruit called durian Fatwa No: 327337
- Fatwa Date:19-7-2016
Is durian (Durio zibethinus), a fruit from Southeast Asia, haram? Thank you.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We are not exactly aware what this fruit is really like. You may ask the scholars in your country about its ruling. The scholars said, “Issuing a ruling on a given matter requires knowing what that matter really is.”
Nonetheless, we can say in general that all things are halaal (lawful to eat) in principle, and we cannot rule that something is haraam except if there is valid evidence that prohibits it. Allaah says (what means): {It is He Who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.} [Quran 2:29]
Ash-Shawkaani said in Fat-h Al-Qadeer, “‘Abd ibn Humayd and Ibn Jareer reported from Qataadah that he explained the verse in which Allaah says (what means) {It is He Who created for you all of that which is on the earth}, saying, '(It means that) he subjected to you all that which is on the earth, as a blessing and grace from Allaah for the son of Aadam (Adam), and a benefit to an appointed time.”
Allaah knows best.
