No evidence that wearing ragged clothes brings about poverty and misfortune Fatwa No: 47531
- Fatwa Date:1-9-2015
Is it true that wearing ragged clothes brings about poverty and bad luck? What is the ruling on wearing trousers beneath the woman's Islamic Abaya? What is the religious ruling on a married woman talking to a non-Mahram (permanently unmarriageable) man over the phone as friends behind her husband's back? What if the husband does so (talked to a non-Mahram woman over the phone behind his wife's back)?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
We have not come across any tradition indicating that wearing ragged clothes brings about poverty and misfortune. However, Muslims are enjoined to wear nice clothes. Allaah, the Exalted, says (what means): {O children of Adam, take your adornment at every Masjid…} [Quran 7:31] Ibn Mas‘ood reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Verily, Allaah is beautiful and He loves beauty." [Muslim]
‘Umar was reported to have said, "When Allaah is generous to you, be generous to yourselves."
It is impermissible for a Muslim woman to communicate with a non-Mahram man except in case of necessity, whether this communication is over the phone or face to face.
If you mean by your question having an unlawful and sinful friendship between a man and a woman, then the prohibition is more emphasized in this case, especially if the woman is married.
Allaah Knows best.
