He resents his father's treatment of his mother Fatwa No: 89302
- Fatwa Date:9-2-2005
My question is regarding my father the problem is concerning his behaviour towards my mother since my childhood. He is beating my mother and now I'm 21-years-old. He stills beats my mother when he stays something against my father's brother or on the issues which goes against my father liking and due to this behaviour of my father towards my mother. I don't respect him meaning don't respect from my heart. I'm doing right or wrong? I don't misbehave with him but I don't talk with him very much. Please provide me answer.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
The parents have a great right in Islam. Allaah paralleled their right with His Right as He says (which means): {…give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination.}[31:14]. If your father is mistreating your mother he is sinful, yet you still have to be kind and dutiful to him despite what happened. It is not permissible for you to cut relations with him or behave in a way to make him sorrowful and anxious. But you are not sinful by not being attracted to him, Inshaa' Allaah; however, you have to endeavour to repel the thoughts that might trigger a kind of hatred towards him and consequently make you undutiful to him.
Allaah knows best.
