Feels shy to say daddy to his father Fatwa No: 91966
- Fatwa Date:25-4-2006
I have a question. My question is I have a father but I don't call him daddy because I didn't stay with him for along time. But I respect him. Is just that I am shy to say daddy to him because I am not use to saying it, but I say mommy to my mom I am shy saying that. Is it bad to not to say daddy to my father.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Allaah ordered the children to be kind and dutiful to their parents, so the children should speak to them with good and soft words which suggest that one loves them and is affectionate to them, and avoid any harsh words which may turn them away from their children, and should call them with the best words to them, like 'my father' and 'my mother'. Allaah Says (what means): {And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," (An expression of disapproval or irritation) and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."}[Quran 17: 23-24]. Therefore, your father should be called by what he likes to be called with, like 'my father' and the like, and it is not permissible to call him with expressions by which he feels that he is disrespected, as the children are obliged to respect their parents. So, you should accustom yourself to call your father with the expression 'my father' and you should not be shy in saying so.
