- Fatwa Date:27-9-2006
i heard tht pepsi has pepsin which is taken from pig intestine so is it sure ?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
It is not confirmed to us whether or not the drink which you mentioned contains an impure ingredient, as many people claim that it does, but the specialists did not confirm this fact to us. However, it is worth mentioning the following three points:
1- Any food or drink to which pork is added becomes impure; therefore it is not permissible to use it without a necessity unless the impure product is totally transformed into another product, and it was transformed before being added to the food or drink. In this case, it becomes permissible to consume that food or drink because it was not mixed with an impurity. When an impurity is transformed, it becomes pure as discussed in Fatwa 90953.
2- The rule which is established by the scholars states that in principle all kinds of food is permissible, as Al-Hajaawi from the Hanbali School of jurisprudence, said: ''In principle all kinds of food are permissible.'' Therefore, one cannot say that a given food or drink forbidden unless the reason of its prohibition is proven with evidence.
3- It is better for a Muslim to avoid doubtful things in order to be content and comforted. The Prophet said: ''Give up what appears doubtful to you and adhere to that which is not doubtful.'' [At-Tirmithi]. The Prophet further said: ''The best of your religion is piety.'' [Al-Haakim & At-Tabaraani].
Therefore, in principle the drink which you mentioned in the question is permissible but if one avoids it as a way of Allaah-fearing and piety and staying away from doubtful things, then it is expected that he will be rewarded for doing so.
