Assalamu alaikum brother, my officemate made me confused for giving name for the new born baby girl her name [Fatima Zarifah], my officemate told me that name is not acceptable then i asked him why, he told me ask for the schoolar (have knowledge in Islam)so please brother can ou give me idea/knowledge why not acceptable? All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fataawa 82724 and 87262 clarifying the guidelines that have to be considered when naming a new-born baby. Therefore, if the name does not contain a religious prohibition, then this name is not forbidden. Hence, it appears that it is permissible to name the new-born with this name "Fatima Zarifah".

If that person means that it is forbidden to name a child with a compound name, then this is not correct because it is permissible to name a new-born child with a compound name as we clarified in Fatwa 97198.
