Her husband wants her to give him money to send to his family Fatwa No: 186495
- Fatwa Date:11-9-2012
I am an American Christian marriage to an Egyptian Muslim. I am not too familiar with Islamic religion and custom but I am trying and willing to learn. My husband and I are beginning to have problems in our marriage regarding money. I feel that his money should be spent on me first then if there is anything left over then he should send some home to his mother and younger brothers. As it stands I make more money and he is now asking me to help him send money home. I am not in agreement with this at all. Can you tell me what is expected of a son and husband according to the Quaran.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
What you think in regard to spending is correct and it is in conformity with the Islamic Fiqh (jurisprudence). In Islam, the husband is obliged to spend on his wife even if she is rich. This is her right upon him and he is not permitted to be negligent of this spending in any case. For more benefit in this regard, please refer to Fataawa (plural of Fatwa) 85715, 31645 and 90834.
Besides, the money that the wife earns is her absolute right and it is not permissible for the husband to oblige her to spend from it either on her own self or on his family unless she does so of her own free will.
An authentic Hadeeth (narration) of the Prophet reads: ''The money of a Muslim is not lawful unless he gives it with his own proper consent.” This also applies to the money of the non-Muslim.
Hence, we advise both of you to have mutual understanding and cooperation so that the family will become stable and you should work together towards achieving more affection and a better marital relationship.
Finally, we advise you to refer to the following Fataawa: 81979, 88906 and 88051 about Islam. We hope that Allaah will bless you by guiding you to Islam which is the true and last religion by which Allaah abrogated all other religions.
On the other hand, there is much falsehood in Christianity and there are many contradictions in the Bible. This proves that it is forged and that it is not the Bible that was sent down [revealed] to ‘Eesa (Jesus) so you should pay attention to this.
Allaah Knows best.
