Eggs with small drops of blood are pure Fatwa No: 291814
- Fatwa Date:17-5-2015
Assalamu Alaikum. Sometime we find a small amount of blood spots inside the egg. Do we need to remove that (as blood is haram) or can we eat the egg with those blood spots? Jazakallah Khair.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
We hope there is no harm in eating an egg with spots of blood inside it because the egg is pure and the blood inside it is not pouring. The Maaliki scholar Al-Hattaab wrote, “The author of Ath-Thakheerah said in the chapter (Kitaab) on food that if there is a spot of blood within egg whites, then it is not regarded impure considering that the blood is not pouring. This issue has been investigated by a group of scholars and no other view (than this) was reached.” [Mawaahib Al-Jaleel]
It is better though to remove the blood and eat the rest.
However, if the egg has turned into blood, then it is regarded as impure according to most scholars. The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Islamic Jurisprudence reads, “If the egg has turned into blood, it is regarded as impure according to the Hanafis and Maalikis, and according to the most preferred opinions of the Hanbalis and the Shaafiʻis. The dispreferred view according to the Shaafiʻis is that it is pure. If the egg has changed by becoming rotten, it is pure according to the Hanafis, Shaafiʻis, and Hanbalis as in the case of the rotten meat. The Maalikis, on the other hand, held that it is impure, but that if the yolk mixes with the whites without rotting, then it is pure.”
A group of scholars maintained that the egg is pure even if it turns into blood. Al-Mardaawi, among the Hanbalis, considered this to be the most valid opinion, and it is the other opinion of the Shaafiʻis. The Hanbali scholar Al-Mardaawi wrote, “The egg that has turned into blood is pure according to the most valid opinion. Ibn Tameem stated so, and it has also been held to be impure.” [Al-Insaaf]
An-Nawawi wrote, "If the pure egg tuned into blood, the scholars held two different views pertaining to its purity, the most valid of which being that it is impure as in the case of all kinds of blood. The second view is that it is pure like other types of food if they change.” [Al-Majmooʻ]
Allaah Knows best.
