salaam aleikoum shaykh, What to do when blood dries up into a crust in wudoo? If one has blood crusts in his nose, should he wash his hands after sniffing up water into his nose before washing his whole face because of these crusts or al the blood crusts (including left-over blood in little amount) excuses/pardoned because of 7araj? wassalaam
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Blood is impure and if it is found on the external parts of the body, it should be washed because purifying the body from impurity is a condition for the validity of the prayer, whether the impurity is moist or dry, unless one fears harm from removing it like if it sticks to a wound inside the nose. It is then pardonable because of harm. Also, if the impurity is a very slight amount, then it is also pardonable according to many jurists.
If the dry blood is inside the nose, it should be washed and purified. Jurists stated that impurity inside the nose should be washed, and that purifying it is a condition for the validity of the prayer. In naming the conditions of the Prayer, it was stated in Tuhfat Al-Muhtaaj: “The fifth [condition for the validity of the prayer] is purifying unexcused impurities from one's garments and the like, including what one bears while praying or what is in direct contact with what one bears while praying; and (purifying unexcused impurities) from the body, including inside the mouth, nose and eyes.”
Al-Bujayrami said in his commentary on Al-Khateeb: “The fourth [condition for the validity of the prayer] is purifying unexcused impurities from one’s garment or body, even inside the nose, mouth, eyes or ears; for Allaah, The Almighty, says (what means): {And your clothing purify.} [Quran 74:4]...”
It was stated in Nihaayat Al-Muhtaaj regarding the inside of the mouth and nose: “If it is impure, it is obligatory to wash it.”
However, it is not obligatory to wash your hands just after using them to rinse your nose if the blood does not come into direct contact with them; rather, it is obligatory that you wash them as part of the ablution after washing the face.
Finally, we are concerned that the questioner may be suffering from a form of Waswasah (i.e. the devil's whispers), so we advise him to ignore them, for that is the best treatment for them.
Allaah Knows best.
