Question

Assalam-o-allaikum My Grand Daughters Name is Leeza is it correct name in Islam. Pls help me. Shukriya

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

In principle, all names are permissible and not prohibited. It is not forbidden to be named with any particular name unless there is an Islamically considerable reason for the prohibition, such as when the name is peculiar to the non-Muslims or dissolute people; this is forbidden for the reason of imitation. Another reason for prohibiting a name is when it has a forbidden meaning, such as when it is the name of polytheists’ god; this is forbidden due to the forbidden meaning. Yet another reason for prohibiting a name is if the name either has a dispraised meaning in Sharee’ah, such as Harb (which means war), Murrah (which means bitter), or if it entails praising the named person; it is forbidden to be named with such names.

If the name is devoid of all these reasons, then it is permissible to be named with it.

Based on this, if the name which you referred to in the question “Leeza” is one of the names commonly used in your Muslim community, and it is not peculiar to the non-Muslims, and it does not consist of any forbidden or dispraised meaning, then there is no harm in naming your granddaughter with this name and it is not an obligation to change it. However, if it consists of any of the above mentioned matters, then one is requested to change it.

Allah knows best.
