Naming a Baby Girl as Yusra Is Permissible
Fatwa No: 388216

Question

Assalamualaikum, can we name a baby girl as Yusra? This is asked because of the Hadith where Prophet saw prohibited to give names like Yassaar, etc. Kindly clarify.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

It is not forbidden to name your baby girl as Yusra.

As for restricting naming a baby with the name Yassar (which means ease) and the like, then the restriction is only to indicate that it is not a desirable name, as clarified by the scholars, but it is not prohibited. The reason for this restriction is to prevent anything leading to people feeling pessimistic or seeing good omens (because of the name). If it is asked: Is Yassar present? And the answer is: ‘No’, then some people might become pessimistic and think that ease and goodness do not exist, as some narrations of the Hadeeth indicated.

Some scholars stated that the restriction was made because the Quraysh have just abandoned the Jaahiliyyah (the pre-Islamic era of ignorance) and polytheism and were new in Islam, and it was pessimistic and seeing bad omens was their habit. However, if this does not exist, then the restriction no longer applies.

Allah knows best.
