Question

Assalamualikum..i named my baby girl "hayaam"..is it good name?what is the meaning in arabic.and whats the name "hiyam"means..

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

In our view, the name Hayam is not among the good names because its meanings in the Arabic language are disliked.

One of the meanings mentioned in language books and dictionaries for Huyam, is madness due to love sickness; Huyam also means a disease or madness that affects camels until they die.

Huyam also means extreme thirst. Hayam means sand that crumbles.

Some contemporary scholars disliked naming children with this name, and they considered it as an undesirable name.

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd said in his book Tasmiyatu al-Mawlood while enumerating the disliked names:

And those sluggish romantic names: Ahlam, Areej, Taghreed, Ghada, Faten, Nahid, and Huyam, which is something that resembles madness due to love sickness or a disease that affects camels, and Hayam means the crumbling sand that does not hold together."

Allah knows best.
