Naming her son 'Kuzeed' Fatwa No: 86150
- Fatwa Date:8-9-2003
I am a Palestinian in Germany, and I will get a new son soon. My mother wants me to give my son the name of my father, a Parisian name called 'Kuzeed'. My question: do I commit a sin if I did or what? I am afraid of this name for many reasons mainly for religious reasons by one hand, and I don't want to anger my parents on the other. Please I need answer.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. There is no harm to name your son the name you are asking about, since it is not among those names that are dislikeable linguistically or customarily. Also, this name does not imply a survituded to other than Allah. However, it is better to name Muslim names rather than the mentioned name or the like. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: The dearest name to Allah is Abdullah and Abdur Rahman . [Reported by Imam Muslim ]. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) also said: Name yourselves by my name . [Reported by Imam al-Bukhari ]. Therefore, it is likeable for the questioner brother to be obedient to his mother, and at the same time he may continue on advising her of the benefit of good names. However, you should deal with her in gentleness and kindness since when gentleness is found in anything, it beautifies it and when it is taken out from anything it leaves it ugly. Allah knows best.
