I would like to keep my new-born son's name Abu Bakr. Is this OK to keep. Because the meaning is father of camels. But I want to keep it due to the status of this great Sahabi?

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The linguists mentioned that the meaning of Bakr in Arabic language means a young camel. So, naming a child with Bakr is permissible. Indeed Ibn Hajar mentioned nine companions whose names were Bakr, and one was named Bukayr.

The name of Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq was 'Abdullaah Ibn 'Uthmaan Ibn 'Aamir, and he was nicknamed Abu Bakr but this was not his name. So, the Prophet approved this nickname and approved naming children with Bakr. This is evidence that it is permissible to name children with Bakr. Indeed the Arabs used to love young camels (Bakrs) and used to name their children with it since the ancient time. Among their well-known tribes was Banu Bakr Ibn Waa'il. Therefore, this name does not have any bad meaning otherwise the Prophet would have changed it as he changed many names that were disliked or forbidden.

Ibn Hajar said about naming the child Waleed: ‘If this name was disliked, the Prophet would have changed it as usual.’
