Question
When I perform Ghusl to remove the state of Janaabah, I fill the bathtub with water and immerse my entire body therein. My question is: If I urinate while my entire body is immersed in water, should I perform Ghusl once more because the water has become impure due to the urine?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
If the water you are performing Ghusl in is little, i.e. is less than two Qullahs which equals approximately one hundred and ninety two liters of water, this water becomes impure by the presence of Najaasah (impurity) according to many scholars or the majority of them. If this water is contaminated with urine, you should purify the parts of your body that came into contact with this impure water. If you immersed your entire body in water before urinating, your state of Janaabah has been removed; thus, you would not have to perform Ghusl again. However, you should wash the parts of your body that were contaminated with the impure water.
Al-Buhooti, The Hanbali scholar, said in Sharh Al-Muntaha: “It is disliked to perform Ghusl in stagnant water and the state of Janaabah is removed from the person before leaving the water.”
If there are parts of your body that were not washed before urinating, you should wash them with pure water with the intention of removing the state of Janaabah. Please note that you may not deliberately urinate in the small amount of water in which you perform Ghusl as this needlessly contaminates you with Najaasah (impurity). This is forbidden according to many scholars.
