Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

First of all, we say that it is permissible for a woman to work especially if there is a necessity for her to do so provided that she abides by the Islamic conditions for a woman going out to work, which are clarified in Fataawa 82399, 83607 and 99860.

Among those conditions is that she seeks the permission of her husband unless she had already stipulated this condition in the marriage contract, in which case, her husband is obliged to fulfill this condition for her. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 180745.

If she had not stipulated this condition in the marriage contract and her husband gives her permission to work, then there is no problem in this. In case he objects, then it is acceptable for her to try to convince him and he should help her in this regard if he is able to do so.

However, if he does not give her permission, then she is obliged to obey him. In this case, the wife should endeavor to help her mother and her relatives with whatever means she can. If she has brothers and sisters who are well-off, then she should urge them to do so. She should clarify to them that spending on the poor parents is an obligation on their children who are well-off, be they sons or daughters. Also, it is an obligation to spend on a poor brother or a poor sister according to the view of some scholars.

Allaah Knows best.
