Hadeeth about angels 'throwing delayed prayer in the delayer's face'

Question

I was told by a Muslim that there is a hadith about those who delay their prayer until it has ended, that the angels take their prayer and roll it and then throw it away i.e it has not been accepted. I don't remember the exact wording since this was 7 or 8 years ago but i would like to know if such a hadith exists? If not, then is this Muslim sinful for telling me this even though the intention was good?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The questioner is probably referring to the Hadeeth which reads: “…and whoever prays a prayer after its time has expired, while he neither perfected its ablution, nor its submissiveness, nor did he fulfill its Rukoo’ (bowing) as it should be, nor its Sujood (prostration), then his prayer comes out black and dark, and it [the prayer] says “May Allaah waste you in the same manner that you have wasted me, until it reaches wherever Allaah wills, it will be wrapped like a ragged garment and then he will be hit with it in the face.” The scholars classified the chain of narration of this Hadeeth as Dha'eef (weak) and Al-Haafith Al-‘Iraaqi said in Takhreej Al-Ihyaa’: "At-Tabaraani reported it in Al-Awsat from the Hadeeth of Anas with a weak chain of narrators, and it was reported by At-Tayaalisi and by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab Al-Eeman from ‘Ubaadah ibn As-Saamit with a similar weak chain of narrators.” [End of quote] Al-Albaani, said about it in Dha’eef At-Targheeb: “Very weak.”

Therefore, there is such a Hadeeth but its chain of narrators is weak, and we hope that the one who informed you of it would not be sinful. However, he should have first made sure whether it is authentic or weak so that he would not attribute to the Sunnah what is not confirmed as being from it. Allaah Knows best.
