Fatwa CenterIs it permissible for one suffering from enuresis to touch the Mus-haf?
Question
I am a Quran teacher. I am suffering from colitis and cannot help passing wind at very short intervals. So, is it binding upon me to perform ablution after each time I pass wind? Knowing that if I do so, I will be forced to perform ablution about ten times throughout the school day, which makes it difficult for me, and wastes the time of the pupils.

Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
The sound opinion, and Allaah Knows best, is that the one suffering from colitis which causes him to uncontrollably pass wind so much is subject to the same ruling applicable to the one suffering from enuresis. It is well-known that the one suffering from enuresis is legally excusable, and treated, concerning ablution and acts of worship, differently from the healthy person. That is out of the Mercy of our Lord upon us, as He Did not Place upon us any difficulty in religion, nor Did He Charge us with what is beyond our capacity.
So, we see that if the teacher suffering from that disease mentioned in the question needs to touch the Mus-haf, it is sufficient for him to perform ablution for the first time, and it is not due on him to repeat it afterwards whenever he passes wind, in view of the difficulty and suffering he might undergo, which contradicts the ease and simplicity of the religion. This is based on the fact that it is permissible, according to the preponderant opinion in the Maaliki school of Fiqh, for both the teacher and learner, to completely, or more correctly speaking, incompletely, touch the Mus-haf.
