Interpretation of: {...Descendants, some of them from others...} [Quran 3 :34]

Question

I would appreciate it if you could provide and explain the exegesis of Chapter 3: Al-Imran: verse 34: {...Descendants, some of them from others. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.} May Allaah reward you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This verse follows the verse in which Allaah says (what means): {Indeed, Allaah chose Aadam (Adam) and Nooh (Noah) and the family of Ibraaheem (Abraham) and the family of 'Imraan over the worlds} [Quran 3:33] The household of Ibraaheem and the household of Imraan are descendants of Nooh and Aadam, and, in this sense, they are one of (from) the other, as well as being one from the other in religion and in supporting each other; Tafseer al-Baghawi reads, The intended meaning of {Offspring} is 'He chose offspring, one from the other,' meaning descendants of each other in the same lineage. Other interpreters said that some of them are from others in supporting each other (for the sake of Allaah) or upon the religion of one another.

Also, As-Saheeh Al-Masboor min At-Tafseer bil-Ma’thoor authored by Dr. Hikmat Basheer, reads, “At-Tabari reported with a good chain of narration from Qataadah, about the saying of Allaah: {Offspring, one of the other} that it means that they are the same in intention, in action (work), in sincerity and in Tawheed to Him (in devotion to Allaah, performing deeds solely for His Sake).

Also, Tafseer of As-Sa'di reads, “{Offspring, one of the other}; meaning that there is a lineage and resemblance between them both in creation and in good moral conduct, as Allaah said, when He mentioned an example in which He stated a number of Prophets who are included in such great homes {And [some] among their fathers and their descendants and their brothers - and We chose them and We guided them to a straight path.}” [Quran 6:87]

Allaah knows best.
