Animals slaughtered by Magi unlawful to eat

Question

Assalamu alaykum. Is it true that ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab accepted meat from the Majoos (Magi) when he was reigning as the Caliph and ate it and distributed it amongst the Companions? Or was it sweets? Did anything like that take place? May Allaah reward you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have not come across any statement regarding ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab may Allaah be pleased with him to this effect.

It should be noted that it was said that there was a consensus among the Companions that it is forbidden to eat the meat of animals slaughtered by the Majoos (the Magi).

Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “The meat of animals slaughtered by the Magi is forbidden to eat according to the majority of the scholars among the predecessors and successors, and it was said, 'There was a consensus among the Companions about this issue.'

Allaah knows best.
