Interpretation of verse: {And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank}

Question

Please comment on the verse that goes: {And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank.}

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Imaam Ibn Katheer says in his commentary on the verse that you asked about, "Allah, The Exalted, informs us of the horrors of the Day of Judgment; He says (what means): {No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed} [Quran 89:21], the earth and the mountains will be flattened, leveled and made even, and the creatures will rise from their graves for their Lord. {And your Lord comes}, meaning, to exact Judgment between His creatures. This is after they intercede with Him by the best of the Sons of Aadam (Adam), Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam."

As-Sa‘di said in his Tafseer:

"{No!} means that not all the wealth that you loved and the pleasures over which you have vied with one another are lasting for you; rather, you shall face a horrific day and grave horrors when the earth and mountains will be crushed until they are left a level plain; therein will be no depression nor elevation. Allah, The Exalted, shall come in canopies of clouds to exact judgment between His slaves, and the angels, the inhabitants of the heavens, will all come rank upon rank; i.e. row after row."

Allah knows best.
