Assalaamu alaykum. {And (warn of) the Day the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified except whom Allaah wills. And all will come to Him humbled.} [Quran 27:87] What does the word Man in the heavens mean here; angels? Or other beings?
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The word 'whoever (ْمَن)' in the verse refers to the angels because they are the inhabitants of the heavens. Allah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And (warn of) the Day the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified except whom Allah wills. And all will come to Him humbled.} [Quran 27:87] At-Tabari commented on the verse saying, “It means that whoever is in the heavens of the angels and whoever is on the earth of mankind, the jinn, and the devils will be terrified due to the horrors of that day.”
The angels fill the heavens, and they are their inhabitants. Al-Haafith Ibn Hajar wrote:
“There are many ahaadeeth about the description of the angels and their great numbers. For instance, ‘Aa'ishah reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘The angels were created from light.’ [Muslim] Abu Tharr reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘The heavens moan and they have the right to moan; there is no spot the size of four fingers in them except that there is an angel prostrating (to Allah) in it.’ [At-Tirmithi, Ibn Majah, and Al-Bazzaar] Jaabir reported that the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘There is not a space in the heavens the width of a foot or four fingers or the palm of the hand except that there is an angel who is standing up (in prayer) or bowing or prostrating (before Allah, the Exalted).’” [At-Tabaraani]
Allah knows best.
