Question
Assalaamu alaykum. What is the ruling on presenting someone a speaker, like an Amazon echo, which will be used to listen to things, including music? It also has many features like games, reading books, a calendar, and so on. Will I earn sins if the person listens to music using this speaker? May Allaah reward you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The basic principle is that it is permissible to present this gift to someone unless you know or believe that he would most likely use it for unlawful purposes. However, if you know or believe that he would most likely not use it for unlawful purposes, then there is no harm in presenting it to him, and you bear no sin if he used it for an unlawful purpose later on.
