Reason of Defeat in Uhud Battle

Question

What are the verses that speak about the battle of Uhud? What are the causes of the Muslim defeat in this battle?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The verses that speak about the battle of Uhud are in Surah Aal ‘Imran, from the verse that reads (what means): {And [remember] when you [O Muhammad] left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle [of Uhud] – and Allah is Hearing and Knowing.} [Quran 3:121] to shortly before the end of the surah.

Among the reasons behind the defeat of the Muslims in this battle which the scholars have mentioned is that when the Companions disobeyed the command of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, Allah Almighty willed to show them the evil consequence of disobedience and dismay and that what befell them was a result of this. He says in another verse (what means): {And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing the enemy by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then he turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers.} [Quran 3:152] When they tasted the consequence of their disobedience to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and their apathy and loss of courage, they became more cautious and attentive about the causes of disappointment. This offers a great lesson for us, Muslims, in these days. The dominance of evil and its people over the Muslims in most parts of the world is only a result of falling into sharia violations, against which we were warned.

We advise our brother, the questioner, to read about these verses in the books of Tafseer (exegesis), like Tafseer Ibn Katheer and Sayyid Qutb's Ath-Thilal, and also the books of Seerah (biography), like the third volume of Zad Al-Ma‘ad by Ibn Al-Qayyim, and Waqafat Tarbawiyyah Min As-Seerah An-Nabawiyyah, by Ahmad Fareed.

Allah knows best.
