Assalam Alaikum
I am a student of economics, we have to study both Islamic and conventional economic systems, for our degree it is necessary to do an internship. my question is that is it permissible to do an internship(unpaid) in a conventional( non Islamic) bank.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
There is nothing wrong in studying the system of usury and interest (Riba) while studying economics as part of the courses the student must take. This is provided that the student does not have the intention to work in anything that is forbidden or to apply these theories in Riba-based institutions and so forth.
If the person has studied economics and will not benefit from what he had studied or get his certificate and will lose all his effort (of studying) if he does not undergo a training session in a bank, and he cannot find an Islamic bank to train in, then, in this case, it is acceptable to train in Riba-based bank. However, he must detest this in his heart and must avoid what is forbidden as much as he can. A necessity should be assessed according to its actual value, and one should not go beyond the need.
Allah knows best.
