Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to eat with a group of menstruating women during the daytime in Ramadhaan? When she eats alone, is there a certain limit that she must not exceed?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
When a woman menstruates during the daytime in Ramadan, she is required to break her fast. She is not permitted to continue in fasting and she has to make up for the missed period later. In Al-Mughni, Ibn Qudaamah said: “The scholars unanimously agree that it is unlawful for a woman experiencing menstruation or post-partum bleeding to fast. Rather, such women are required to break their fast and then make it up later. If they observed fasting, it is invalid since ‘Aa’ishah said, 'We used to menstruate during the time of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and we were commanded to make up for fasting but not to make up for the prayer.' She means that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, commanded them to do so. Abu Sa‘eed reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said (to women), 'Does not one of you abandon prayer and fasting during menstruation, this is the deficiency in your religiousness.' [Al-Bukhari]”
Consequently, this menstruating woman has to break her fast and she may eat alone or with others who are not required to fast under Sharee‘ah. One is permitted to eat whatever he wants of lawful food with neither excessiveness nor squandering. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And eat and drink, but be not excessive.} [Quran 7: 31]
It is narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Eat, drink and wear but with neither excessiveness nor arrogance.” [An-Nasaa’i, Ibn Maajah and others]
Having one's full, however, is dispraised under Sharee‘ah. It is narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “No child of Adam has filled a receptacle worse than his or her stomach. It is sufficient for the child of Adam to eat a few morsels (of food) that set his or her back-bone upright (keep him alive). If the child of Adam is under the pressure of his soul inclination (to eat more) he should allot a third (of his stomach) to the food, a third to the drink and a third to the breath.” [Ibn Maajah and At-Tirmithi]
Allaah Knows best.
