Such Expectations Are not a Kind of Soothsaying

Question

As Salam Alaykum shaikh, i had a question regarding fortune telling, when reading business books or watching videos related to business, the author would say statements like, it is predicted that the demand would reach this point of time at this much time period or you can expect this much production, or this much production can be achieved or this much profit can be made with this much investment or the deman would be this much by a particular period of time, I read in a fatwa in your website any statement based on data is not fortune telling, so is it fortune tellling because I don’t know whether the author is giving information from data or fortune telling? Jazak Allahu Khayran and forgive me shaikh you asked me to resend my last question but I didn’t.May Allah bless you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Such expectations are not a kind of soothsaying. According to Al-Khattabi’s Maaʿlim As-Sunan, “the soothsayer is the person who claims the knowledge of the unseen and who informs people of the matters of the different worlds.

We advise you to keep away from whispers and to ignore them.

Allah knows the best.
