Ruling on wearing a gold-made watch for both sexes

Question

What is the Sharee'ah ruling on wearing a watch made of gold or one having some golden parts?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible for women, not men, to wear gold-made watches. This is based on the general indication of the Hadeeth, signifying that women are permitted to wear and adorn themselves with gold. Abu Moosa may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Gold and silk are permissible for the females of my Ummah (community) and forbidden for the males." [Ahmad, An-Nasaa’i, At-Tirmithi and Al-Hakim]

So, everything a woman adorns herself with and wears of silk or gold is considered an adornment. Allaah Almighty says (what means): {So is one brought up in Hilyah while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allaah]?} [Quran 43: 18]

Commenting on the verse, Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him said that Hilyah is ornaments. Ibn ‘Abbaas and others, may Allaah be pleased with hem, said that they are the young girls, for their dress is different from that of men. Mujaahid may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "Women are permitted to wear gold and silk."

Whether the watch is purely gold-made or just contains some gold, the ruling remains the same for women. As for men, they are not permitted to wear gold, even if it is mixed with another material.

Allaah Knows best.
