Question
When one makes a vow to slaughter a ewe, how should its meat be distributed? Should I distribute it in the same way as the Udh-hiyah? Is the one who makes the vow entitled to eat from it?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
When someone makes a vow to perform an act of obedience, he should do it exactly as he vowed. If you intended to distribute the meat of the slaughtered ewe among the poor and needy, it is obligatory on you to do so. If you vowed to distribute it among your household and relatives, you are entitled to a share of it just like the others. This is so unless the common practice in your country is that the vow-maker is not entitled to eat from what he offers as a vow or unless you intended to exclude yourself upon making the vow. If you did not specify the eligible recipients of the ewe that you vowed to slaughter and made an absolute vow, it should be distributed among the same eligible recipients of voluntary charity. It should be given to the poor and needy and you should not eat from it unless the common practice in your country is that the person who makes a vow to offer foodstuff is entitled to a share of it and eat from it. So, in such a case, the common practice is the only factor that renders it permissible for you to eat from the slaughtered ewe.
