How to introduce a monk to Islam

Question

I am living in France and I know a monk; we meet once a week and discuss religions sometime but I don't know how to introduce him to Islam. What must I do?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. Allah says: {And argue not with the people of the Book (Jews & Christians) unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner inviting them to Islamic monotheism with His verses), except with such of them who do wrong, and say to them “We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, Our Ilah (God) and your Ilah is One (i.e. Allah) and to Him we have submitted as (Muslims). [29: 46] He also says: {Invite (all) to the way of the Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious} [14:125]. Allah also says: {But speak to him mildly; perchance, he may take warning or fear of (Allah)} [20:44]. We can deduce from the above evidence that anyone who wants to tackle this issue should have a great deal of knowledge and understanding of the Qur’an and the Sunnah. He should also be aware of the discussions and conflicts that had taken place between Muslims and the people of the Book, in order to avoid any possible disturbances. If the person is short of any of these capabilities, he should keep away from this issue or leave it to somebody who is more knowledgeable. We advise our brother not to put himself in a critical situation i.e. to preach with true knowledge and not to argue. You may also try to convince your friend to read booklets which include these issues, i.e. Christian’s suspicions about Islam and how to respond to them. You may also invite a more knowledgeable friend to clarify the truth for him if he is willing to learn. Finally, you should give him some books and cassettes to help him understand the truth. (Islamic centers could be of great help). And Allah knows best.
