Muslim Convert Wants to Marry Muslim Man

Question

Can a woman who converted from Christianity to Islam get married to a Muslim man? This woman was married to a Christian man and has 1 child. She converted to Islam 4 months ago and she didn't inform her husband about that. She and her Christian husband were living in separate countries for the last year. She is practicing Islam now and she wants to get married to a Muslim man to get her away from the non-Muslim society.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we congratulate you upon embracing Islam, the only true religion that Allah has chosen for His Creatures. Allah has made Paradise forbidden for anyone who does not accept Islam as His Religion. We pray to Allah to accept your Islam and make you steadfast on His Path and true Guidance.

Know, dear sister, that it is not permitted for you to keep your marital relation with your husband after your Islam. You have to observe a waiting period that begins from the date you embraced Islam. If your husband accepts Islam during your waiting period, then the marriage will continue and you will remain his wife. If he does not accept Islam, the separation between you and your husband becomes effective and you will not need to assume a waiting period for a second time.

After having finished the waiting period you can marry any Muslim man provided he is religious and good-natured to help you learn and follow Islam in the best way.

Allah knows best.
