Discarding materials bearing name of Allaah or Quranic verses

Question

What are the dealings of having Quran or any Tawheed words in your notebook cover? I have cover that is torn out from my notebook and I have Bismillaah and Allaahu Akbar written in there. So I was trying to throw away before that I erased it. I was just curious of thinking that If its sin to throw even though I erased it or if it's Haraam to put Quran or any kind of Tawheed? If it's not Haraam because my little brother 11 years old has Surah Faatihah on his cover which is lit bit in bad condition so I was just thinking to take it away he doesn't want it. What is the situation between boy and girl who are not married and there are student can they be friends? Is it ok that friends can make jokes about each others if they allow each other?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The method of getting rid of something on which the name of Allaah is written, or a verse from the Quran, or a narration of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) or anything from religion is to burn them or soak them in water and then bury them, or put them in a shredding machine or by scratching the writings until the writing totally disappears. So if one does any of the above procedures, it would be sufficient for him and he is not sinful. On the contrary he will be rewarded for respecting the names and attributes of Allaah, and for respecting His Verses and His Religion. It is confirmed that 'Uthmaan may Allaah be pleased with him ordered that some copies of the Quran be burnt after he had compiled the final copy of the Quran and distributed it to the Muslims.

As regards having the said things on a cover [of a book] and knowing that it might be despised or misused, then it is not permissible to write any religious words on it. In relation to the cover of the book on which Al-Faatihah (the opening chapter of the Quran) is written, one should erase it from the cover because leaving it is despising the Quran. If it is possible to erase it without getting rid of the cover, then it is acceptable otherwise you have to get rid of the cover by one of the above-mentioned procedures whether or not your brother is pleased.

Allaah knows best.
