I work for a company which gives me two cigar packs every month. Since I don't smoke, I would sell these packs to non-Muslim shops. Is this money Haraam or Halaal to me? If Haraam, can I distribute this money to poor without expecting any Sawaab?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Cigarettes are forbidden in Islam because of the harm which they cause. Since the cigarettes are forbidden, buying them or selling them is also forbidden, it is also not permissible to work in companies which sell or produce cigarettes. The Prophet said: "When Allaah forbids something to people, He forbids its price to them." [Ahmad] Therefore, it is not permissible for you at all to accept these cigar packs from the company. You are obliged to destroy the packs that you possess at the moment and it is not permissible to sell them even with the intention of giving the money in charity. However, if you had already sold some of them then you are obliged to get rid of the money by spending it in the general interest of Muslims, like spending it on the poor and destitute.
Allaah Knows best.
