Is it halal for a muslim women to do masters at home in English Literature. Privately meaning studing by herself and only going to college (all girls) to write exmas. There is no mixing of men. and she will get a masters so she can teach her own kids at home then.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
We have already issued Fatwa 90355 clarifying that studying some worldly sciences is a communal obligation for Muslims in order to fulfil the needs of the nation, and we clarified that it is permissible for a Muslim woman to go out of her home in order to study provided some religious requirements are met.
Therefore, it is permissible for a Muslim woman to study a master's degree in English literature on her own, provided the religious requirements mentioned in the above-referred Fatwa are met. However, if this requires her to travel on her own for her exams at the college, then a woman is not permitted to travel unless she is accompanied with a husband or a Mahram (i.e. a person whom one is permanently prohibited from marrying due to suckling, marital, or blood relations). For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 89460.
Allaah Knows best.
