Participating Da’wah in a mosque built from ill-gotten money

Question

Assalamu alaikum: There are a group of muslims who work as cooks and cook pork in diners. they are buliding a majid. the Imam works at Olive Graden where they also serve alcohol. he too cooks pork. these poeple know that what they are doing is haram ,yet they are asking to support the masjid financially and otherwise, by attending it and participating in activities which it might carry. As a muslim am I allowed to step foot in the masjid and support them?Where do I stand as a muslim if I had already tried to convince them to leave their jobs and find something halal. What should the families of these fathers do if they don't want to eat haram money yet that is their only income?Can their friends eat from their food when they invite them over to eat with them if they know that it is coming from haram money. Jazakum Allah khair.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There is no doubt that selling, cooking, or serving pork for people to eat, as well as serving intoxicants, is forbidden and whoever did so is obliged to repent to Allaah. However, this does not prevent from cooperating with that group in building the mosque, performing the congregational prayers and participating in Da’wah activities there. The prayer in a mosque which is built from ill-gotten money is valid; however, the person who built it with ill-gotten money will get no reward for building it because Allaah only accepts that which is pure.

If a person participates in building the mosque with lawful money, he will get the reward to the extent which he participated in it.

You are obliged to advise those brothers and warn them of the wrath of Allaah and His severe punishment. Then, if they do not take heed and you know that deserting them will be a deterrent for them from committing those sins, then you should desert them. Otherwise, you should continue to advise them and you will be rewarded for doing so.
