Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we thank and praise Allaah Who guided you to Islam and we ask Him to make you firm and steadfast on His Religion until the Day you meet Him. You should be grateful to Allaah for this great bounty.

We advise you to seek beneficial knowledge, perform good deeds and befriend righteous and pious women, as these are the best things that help a Muslim woman remain steadfast on her religion.

You should know that in Islamic Law, being chaste is a condition for the validity of marrying a woman from the People of the Book and if she is a fornicator, it is not valid to marry her. Therefore, if this marriage took place before you repented to Allaah from fornication, then the marriage is void in principle.

However, if you wish that the marital bond between you and your husband would continue, then you may renew the marriage contract with the consent of your Muslim guardian and the presence of two witnesses. If you have no Muslim guardian, you should appoint a Muslim man to marry you off.

Moreover, according to the most preponderant opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them you should make Istibra’a (i.e. to separate and have no contact with your husband to make sure that you are not pregnant) and this is by observing one menstrual period according to some scholars, but some other scholars, are of the view that making Istibra’a should be by observing three menstrual periods.
