Fatwa CenterPraying with a slight deviation from Qiblah
Question
Salaam alia kum,
We have installed a new carpet (containing rows) in our office prayer room. The Qibla diection is offset between 4 - 8 %. We are aware that the direction is offset, do we need to re-install the carpet in the correct direction or is it ok to continue praying offset by 4 - 8%. Please send Fatwa soon.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Scholars stated that the person who sees the Ka`bah must face the Ka`bah itself (See Fatwa 84109), but the person who does not see the Ka`bah, must face its direction.
Consequently, you do not have to reinstall the carpet in the mosque and your prayer with this slight deviation is valid, Allaah Willing. Nonetheless, it is better to preserve the correct direction of the Qiblah by either reinstalling the carpet, or directing the performers of prayer to the correct direction by making signs on the carpets.
