Question

I work in an industry that produce shoes from pig skin. I am from Bangladesh. Is it halal to work in this kind of industry? Please, answer with Quran and Hadith referencs.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible for you to work in shoes industry and other products produced from pig skin based on the opinion that says that the pig skin becomes pure if it is tanned. Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "If the skin is tanned, it becomes pure.” [Muslim]

Also, the Hadeeth narrated by Ahlus-Sunan (Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa’ee, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah) reads: “Any skin that is tanned is pure.” Both of these wordings are general texts.

On the other hand, according the opinion that tanning does not affect (the state of impurity of) the pig skin, and which is the view of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them it is not permissible to work in producing shoes from pig skin or in any other pig skin-related industry.

However, the first opinion is a considerable opinion, so it is permissible to do the job that you mentioned in the question, but it is better to leave it and look for another job as a way of taking into consideration the view of the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.
