Conditions of permissibility for a wife to wear whatever she wishes before her husband

Question

I heard an opinion of one of the scholars about clothes worn by a wife before her husband when they are alone with each another. Is it permissible for a wife to wear whatever she wishes; transparent, tight, or short clothes before her husband or even stay with him scantily dressed?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

A wife is allowed to wear whatever she wishes before her husband or even wear nothing at all, as long as it is before her husband only. This is with the condition that she does not hold the intention of imitating non-Muslim women or men, for there is an explicit prohibition in this regard.

Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him said, "The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women." [Al-Bukhari]

Moreover, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "The one who imitates a people (in their looks or actions) becomes one of them." [Abu Daawood; As-Suyooti: good]

Allaah Knows best.
