Your taking a car loan has nothing to do with your income

Question

Assalamualeyikum, I have taken an auto loan for my car & i pay EMI per month which has two portions - Principle - Interest I didn't had capacity to purchase a new car so i took loan, Is it allowed? Also e.g. if i am earning 50,000 & paying 2,000 as interest per month then will my entire 50,000 would be considered as haraam? does this means whatever i am eating, drinking is all haraam Is this sin bigger then working in Bank?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

What you did, which is borrowing money with Riba (interest and/or usury), is not permissible; rather, it is one of the great major sins as by doing so, you give Riba to others to consume and it is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Allaah has cursed the one who consumes Riba, the one who gives it to others, the one who records it and the one who witnesses it (its transaction)”, and he said: “All of them are equal in sin.” [Muslim]

In general, working in a bank that deals with Riba is forbidden but its sin is not like the sin of the one who gives Riba to others to consume. But the more the work in a bank that deals with Riba is connected to the Riba contract (i.e. writing it and witnessing it) the more it is sinful than other work that is not connected with it as per the Hadeeth mentioned above about the one who writes it and the one who witnesses it “…are equal in sin.”

Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him said in “Al-Mufhim”: “…are equal in sin.” means in deserving the curse and in sinning.” He also said: “The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said that they are equal in sin because the Riba contract is only concluded with the participation of all of them.

Besides, Mulla Al-Qaari may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “They are equal in regard to being sinful even though the degree of sin of each of them might be different.

Therefore, you are obligated to repent to Allaah and regret what you did and be determined not to return to it again in the future. However, this sin does not make your salary that you get from a lawful job forbidden; rather, the salary remains lawful.
