Asallam U Alaikum, Is it permissible for a person to renew their faith from time to time by making the intention to renew their faith and then saying the shahadah, not because they said anything that took them out of Islam (Allah Forbid), but to be on the safe side as the person always worries they may have said or done something unknowingly. If this is not permissible and they have been doing this and have told their spouse to do this too, did this affect the couples nikkah or faith in any way ?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
We implore Allaah to keep you safe and sound, shield you against evil, and guide you to that which is best for you. In fact, you have been haunted with obsessive satanic whisperings and they have caused you serious and considerable harm. This is because you did not dispel such whisperings and did not strive in warding them off. We have highlighted many times that the optimal remedy for such satanic whisperings is to seek refuge in Allaah and totally ignore them.
The following are some means which can help you repel such whisperings:
1 - Turning to Allaah, honestly and sincerely, and imploring Him to heal you from such a sickness.
2 – Reciting the Quran and Thikr (mention of Allaah) frequently, especially the morning and evening Athkaar and the supplications to be recited upon sleeping and waking up.
3 – Keeping the company of righteous people, attending Islamic lessons and gatherings, and avoiding the company of bad friends or isolating oneself from people.
4 – Consulting a scholar or a seeker of knowledge in your country and acting upon his/her advice and directions.
You state that you used to utter the two testimonies of faith out of prudence so as to be on the safe side. This is not considered a renewal of faith; these are mere satanic whisperings with which you have been afflicted. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, taught us to supplicate Allaah to renew the faith within our hearts. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Faith wears out in the heart of anyone of you just as clothes wear out, so ask Allaah to renew faith in your hearts.” [Al-Haakim in Al-Mustadrak - Al-Albaani classified Saheeh (sound)]
Hence, you should give up such whisperings and should not ask your spouse to utter the two testimonies of faith out of prudence. It should be noted that this does not affect the validity of your marriage or your faith.
Allaah Knows best.
