What is the indication of the names Ya‘ooq and Nasr which are mentioned in the Quran? Thank you.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
These names are mentioned in Soorat Nooh where Almighty Allaah Says (what means): {And said, Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghooth and Ya‘ooq and Nasr.}[Quran 71:23]
They are the names of righteous men from among the people of Nooh (Noah) . When they died, their people grieved for their death, and then the devil inspired them to make images of them so as to remember them. The people made the images and did not worship them. During the subsequent generations, however, the devil inspired people that their ancestors used to worship such idols and thus they worshipped them instead of worshipping Allaah. The origin of this story is narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Saheeh, on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas .
