Leaving children with their non-Muslim grandparents

Question

Asalam Aleikom, Me and my husband are moslims, so are our kids. Our parents are not. I would like to ask you if can I leave them our kids for some time, for example two weeks or one months if needed. They are not trustfull. Thanks for answer.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

If these parents are not trustful as you mentioned and it is concerned that they will be a bad influence on the children, then you should not leave your children in their company without the presence of either parent or someone who can keep them safe. Children are a blessing from Allaah entrusted to their parents, who must strive to preserve their religiosity and morals and protect them from corruption. Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allaah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.}[Quran 66:6]

Ibn ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "and the man is a guardian and is responsible for his wards; and the woman is a guardian in her husband's house and is responsible for her wards." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Needless to say, failing to preserve a trust of money or property is a breach of trust. In this case, failure to protect one's children is a much graver breach of trust.
