Money obtained from selling store that sells pork and alcohol

Question

Assalaamu alaykom wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. My father, who is a Muslim, used to own 50% of a store that sold pork and alcohol, and his partner was also Muslim. He sold the business a while back but kept the property. His partner used to pay my father monthly rent. Now the property is up for sale and my dad is going to sell it. I now live with a relative that makes 100% halal money, praise be to Allaah, but I need some money to pay for college because I do not want to get a student loan; my relative cannot afford to pay my tuition. I want to ask my father to give me some of the money that he will receive from selling the property but do not know if this money, since it was the property, not the business, is halal or haram. Is it permissible to take the money and use it for my school, or is it haram and I thus should refrain from obtaining it? May Allaah reward you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

As long as your father owns a share in the property in reference, the money that he earns from selling his share in it is lawful. Hence, there is no harm in asking your father to give you part of this money for your education or for any other need.

Allaah knows best.
