Paying money to see the prospective wife

Question

What is the ruling on paying money in order to see the girl whom the man wants to marry?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is recommended for the suitor to see of the girl whom he wants to marry what encourages him to marry her. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “When one of you asks for a woman in marriage, if he is able to look at some of what will induce him to marry her, he should do so." [Ahmad and Abu Daawood]

According to the majority of scholars, there is no need to have the permission of the girl or her family.

We do not find any opinion of scholars on paying money in order to see the girl whom the person wants to marry, as the matter of seeing her is not something to be owned, so, it cannot be sold.
